"It's been my privilege to watch the final phases of Burghley, then Blenheim last weekend, from the ringside. Aside from fine weather, and overfriendly Foxhounds diving into the stands, these events shared one other important characteristic; a really exciting final phase, with crowds oohing and aahing at every toppling show jump.

The tight time-allowed for three-day event show jumping has been commented on before, and these days ropey show jumpers don't get far in advanced eventing. Burghley and Blenheim's tracks certainly tested combinations, and built the competitions to the most exciting climaxes."
