So why pick on cycling? British Cycling boss Peter King says that they are "obviously concerned and unclear as to the rationale behind the exclusion," but the minister in question is blanking him. "We have written to the secretary of state James Purnell three times, to his special advisers twice and once to the civil servants asking for a meeting. We have received nothing except one letter of recognition at our attempt to make contact," King said. So have they gone to ground after realising they've made a mistake? It certainly looks that way. What's the difference between going for a ride and swimming a few lengths? And bike riding is certainly more athletically demanding than horse riding or sailing. The CTC, Sustrans and the National Byway are all "up in arms" and are offering their support. Add Cycling Weekly to the list. Having rather more success are Britain's track cyclists, who showed stunning form on the boards in Beijing - the latest round of the UCI Track World Cup held at the 2008 Olympic velodrome in the Chinese city. GB riders scored an impressive tally of medals across the Olympic disciplines, and we report on their success in this week's magazine. Also in the issue our Fitness team give you tips on how to burn off the festive fat; we present nine pages of all the latest products including Pinarello Montello FP8 bike test; go riding in Shropshire, Tenerife and Exmoor; and give you details of next year's Tour of Spain, plus much more... |
