TAKING ON A GIANT

In this week's special Christmas issue of Cycling Weekly we feature Mont Ventoux, the best Euro climb as nominated by you. The Giant of Provence unites CW readers who rate the fearsome, 22-kilometre brute as the one must-ride mountain for every cyclist.

Although it is not the steepest, or the longest, it is perhaps the most famous hill after Alpe d'Huez, and it is certainly the most notorious following Tom Simpson's death less than a mile from the summit 40 years ago.

The Tour de France has visited the climb just 13 times, most recently five years ago, but each and every stage I can recall has been a memorable showdown. Most years the Ventoux also features in the Dauphiné Libéré, and the lower slopes are often used for Paris-Nice.

So are you up for the challenge? Last year I had planned an inaugural readers' ride, but unfortunately it had to be put on hold when I was sidelined with a back injury. Now the editor is back on his bike and at the risk of tempting fate, I'm planning to revisit the Ventoux before next year's Tour de France. Two years ago I was 15 minutes outside my two-hour target, and that didn't include my 10-minute stop at Châlet Reynard.

We're still in the planning stages at the moment, but if you've got any spare time at the beginning of June you may wish to join us.

Before then, we've got plenty to help wile away the dark winter nights. In this week's super-large magazine, we present a run-down of what you thought were the high and low points of 2007. The results of our annual Reader Poll have thrown up the usual mix of the expected and the controversial.

Andy Jones presents his pick of pics from 2007, from early season cyclo-cross to the Tour de France, Andy has covered it all in glorious technicolour.

Plus we've got a round-up of wet weather clothing, bike tests, latest British and international news, a Tuscan ride with Geraint Thomas, interviews, results and much, much more.
