It's obvious why cross is an ideal introduction to competitive cycling and, encouraging as the weekend's turn-out was, just imagine the potential if cycling was made a school sport. In part two of our campaign to get cycling on the National Curriculum we speak to the four leading UK cycling movements, who are crying out for more government support. Phillip Darnton, chair of Cycling England, says that while what's going on is positive, it's the scale that needs addressing. Every year for the last seven years, British Cycling has involved 25,000 children in its cycling programmes with a staff of just 12 full-time Go-Rides coaches. This figure increases to 25 this year, but considering there are some 26,000 schools in the UK, it's just a drop in the ocean. You can read a full report from the National Cyclo-Cross Championship in this week's magazine. Plus we've got news of the new Great Britain women's team, give you tips and advice on setting out your 2008 training plan, round-up a selection of winter bikes, check out the route of the Maratona dles Dolimiti sportive and take a ride with Hugh Porter. We're also giving away a pull-out poster map of the entire 2008 Tour de France route! |
