Those days are long gone and ever since the Olympics and Paralympics our gold medalists have been national heroes. It was a fitting finale to a fantastic season that all 19 riders should feature in the New Year Honours list along with boss David Brailsford. No other sport even came close to such a haul and hat's not including an extra MBE awarded to long serving London official Eddie Wingrave for his services to cycling. Bike riders receiving knighthoods? I wouldn't have bet on it before August but Britain has fallen in love with bike racing and Chris Hoy is the sport's worthy figurehead. Magnanimous, humble, the Scot is the perfect ambassador, loved by the broadsheets and tabloids alike. Who else would tell the BBC “I'm as delighted with my mum becoming MBE as I am with my knighthood”? Carol Hoy, a retired nurse was honoured for her work on sleep-related illness. “I wouldn't want her day to be overshadowed by me but it would be nice if we were both there together,” says her son. It's been a hectic four months for the sprinter and he's typically playing down his chances at the World Champs, less than 11 weeks away. “I want to keep my hand in and see how it goes. I see them as the first step to winning another Olympic title in 2012,” says Sir Chris. In this week's Cycling Weekly, we list the cyclists awarded in this year's honours list and look back at their achievements. We also look ahead to this weekend's Revolution track meet, where many of those Olympians awarded MBEs will be racing in front of a sell-out crown in Manchester. Elsewhere in this week's issue we predict the fitness and training trends to look out for in 2009; bring you news on all the latest cycling products; take a ride around Durham with Matt Kipling; and round-up the week's British and international cycling news. Plus we include a pull-out 2009 Tour de France map and stage list. |
